Lost 4.06 Ji Yeon

On the grand scale of sucking, I would place that one just above Jack’s tattoo episode and the Nikki and Paolo episode and just behind The Glass Ballerina. That episode sucked big hairy donkey balls. I’m not a huge fan of the Sun/Jin story line in general – I find it contrived and boring. Jin is easy on the eyes and Sun can act, but I think they have one of the weakest storylines. 

On-Island, Jin has learned to speak passable English pretty much overnight. I think immersion really does work well, but they should have written broken English. He uses articles and verb agreement too well, and his vocabulary is too substantial for a 3 month informal language immersion. Who taught him the word “affair”? When Sun and Jin come out to say hi to Kate, a huffy jealous little Kate tells them that the Freighties attacked her and that Juliet lied to Jack about the Tempest being a power station. Jealous much, Kate? She doesn’t like Jack and Juliet spending time together one little bit. Sun asks Daniel about it flat-out and he tells her it’s not his call. So Sun goes off half-cocked and starts hustling to leave for the beach. Juliet comes to stop her and since she won’t stop, Juliet tells Jin what Sun confided to her – that she cheated on him – in order to start a fight between them and give her more time to convince her that she is really dying.

 

Then Sun and Jin have a big-ass fight. Jin withdraws to his man-cave/fishing boat for a little brokeback time with Bernie where they commiserate about being married. Sun and Juliet talk on the beach, and Juliet convinces her that she really is dying. Then Sun and Jin make up and talk about whether the baby is really his and it is. I went back and checked to see whether the date of conception was possible and actually it totally is. Juliet says that conception occurred on Day 35/October 26. Jin and Sun had that big fight the day before and weren’t living together or speaking then. But if they did the baby dance the night before the fight she could have conceived on Day 35. Especially with Jin’s Island Super-Sperm.

 

In Jin’s FB, he is desperately trying to buy a stuffed panda bear as a gift to the Chinese Ambassador from Paik Heavy Industries. We were meant to think that this was a FF and that Jin was trying to get to the hospital for the birth of Ji Yeon. I realized it was a FB when the toy store owner said that it was the Year of the Dragon – 2000. The reason I hated this was that it added nothing to Jin’s back story and was only there to trick us. It was a nothing throwaway FB.

 

In Sun’s FF, she goes into labor in her apartment and is taken to the hospital where she is recognized as one of the O6. She gives birth, alone, without her family, screaming her head off for Jin the whole time. Where are her parents? I think she must have found out about her father’s connection to Widmore and won’t see them. Otherwise her mother would be with her. She gives birth to a lovely baby girl who she names Ji Yeon. Hurley comes to Sun’s apartment to visit Jin’s grave with her. There’s a very touching scene at Jin’s grave and the headstone reveals that his recorded date of death is September 22, 2004. So the story is that Jin died in the crash.

 

On the Freighter, things are very very weird. Des and Sayid have received an anonymous warning not to trust the captain. Various things around the ship keep getting sabotaged. The engine is messed up, the kitchen is messed up, all communication to the mainland is down. people are freaking out, committing suicide, the ship is moving? Not moving? When the doctor shows Des and Sayid to their roach-infested accommodations, there’s a big bloodstain on the wall where someone blew their brains out. He calls down the hall for Johnson to come and clean it up and when Johnson gets there…..It’s Michael!! WTF? And it’s not a Michael who just got pulled out of the water with Walt 3 weeks ago. This Michael is clean and buff and is Walt-less. Very very weird. How do you think Michael got there? I think that the 325 bearing takes you through another wormhole to a different where and when.

 

Sayid and Des even get to speak to the Captain. Up on deck. The helicopter is gone and Regina jumps off the deck into the water. The Captain shows them the Black Box from flight 815 and asks – who would stage a place crash and where in the world would Ben Linus get 324 dead bodies? This just makes me think that Ben, or at least his backers, is even more powerful than we thought. He’s referred to the magic box on the Island before, or maybe that the Island itself is a magic box. That anything you want, when you open the box it will be there. Could that even mean a whole duplicate airplane with 324 dead bodies on board? Or did they not investigate the bodies too closely? I can see faking a flight recorder. Ben could have just taken the real flight recorder from 815 where it crashed in the jungle and planted it on the plane.

 

I also think that the O6 consists of Jack, Kate, Aaron, Hurley. Sayid and Sun. That’s it. I don’t’ think that Jin. Claire and all the rest are really dead. But I think that the O6 think they are. My guess is that Ben makes it look like the volcano blows up the Island and the 6 leave thinking that everyone is gone and dead. Then they have a motivation to come back when they realize that their people are still alive.
